How to Apply for the Required National Provider Identifier
Pharmacists will need a National Provider Identifier (NPI), a government- issued unique number, to file electronic claims after May 23, 2007. Pharmacists and other health care providers may obtain their NPI by applying on line at the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System Web site, requesting a paper application by calling NPI Enumerator at 800-465-3203, or applying for bulk enumeration, which allows an Electronic File Interchange Organization (EFIO) approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to obtain a number of providers’ NPI.
